Highest and Lowest Unemployment Rate by Major Metro Area
Nationally, the unemployment in May was 7.6%. Of the 372 metropolitan areas in the United States, 138 reported unemployment at or in excess of this figure. The metro areas with the highest unemployment include many California locations and a few east coast cities. Yuma, Arizona tops the list with a 30.8% unemployment rate.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, 234 metro areas report an unemployment rate below the national average. Most of the metro areas that are among the lowest in the country are located in the Great Plains region. Bismark, North Dakota has the lowest unemployment in America at 2.4%
